Starting again, with dignity

In many Desi families a second marriage still comes with quiet pressure: relatives who would rather not talk about it, and well-meaning aunties who only suggest a match for someone else who has been married before. Yet remarriage is common, and many families now treat it as what it is, a new beginning.

Khandaan is built for that. A parent, sibling or the person themselves can create the profile, and the family’s own introduction is where you can explain as much or as little as you like. Read more in remarriage in Desi families: starting again with dignity.

What families often discuss early

  • Whether there are children, who they live with, and how a new partner fits into their lives.
  • Where the couple will live, and whether either is open to moving city.
  • How involved both families will be, and what each expects from them.
  • Practical matters, like when a divorce was finalised, so the legal side is clear before a wedding date is set.

Questions families ask

Can divorced or widowed people list on Khandaan?

Yes. Every profile states marital status, Never Married, Divorced, Widowed or Annulled, so families can see it up front and nobody has to explain it in a first message. Creating a profile is free.

What do I need before I can remarry in Australia?

Your previous marriage must have legally ended. When you give your celebrant the Notice of Intended Marriage, they will ask for evidence of how your last marriage ended, such as a divorce certificate or your former spouse’s death certificate. An Australian divorce order usually takes effect one month and one day after it is made, so plan your date around it.

Is a religious divorce enough to remarry?

Not on its own, if your marriage was legally registered. A talaq, khula or other religious divorce does not end a legal marriage in the eyes of Australian law; that needs a divorce order. Overseas divorces may be recognised, depending on how and where they were granted. Check with a family lawyer for your situation.

Can I mention children on my profile?

Yes. The family introduction on your profile is the place to say whether there are children, who they live with, and what matters to you. Being open about it early saves everyone time and builds trust.
