How identity verification works

Every family and matchmaker on Khandaan goes through the same check before their profile can appear in the directory.

Who verifies it

Khandaan does not collect, view, or store your government ID document. Verification is handled entirely by Stripe Identity — the same identity-verification infrastructure Stripe operates for businesses that need to confirm who they're dealing with, built on the encrypted document and biometric-matching technology Stripe already uses at scale for payments.

When you click “Verify with Stripe,” you leave Khandaan and land on a page hosted directly by Stripe, at a stripe.com address. Your document photo and selfie are submitted to Stripe, not to us.

What the check actually does

  • Confirms the document you photograph is a genuine, unaltered government ID (an Australian driver's licence or passport, or an equivalent).
  • Matches a live selfie against the photo on the document, to confirm the person holding the phone is the person on the ID.

This is a fraud-deterrence check, not a background check. It confirms a real document belongs to a real, present person — it does not verify occupation, income, education, marital status, or any other detail you enter on your profile. Those remain self-reported, and families should use their own judgement before relying on them.

What happens to your result

Stripe sends Khandaan only the outcome — verified or not — never the document image or the extracted details.
Most checks resolve within a few minutes. You'll get an email either way, and you don't need to keep the page open waiting.
Once verified, your listing can go live in the directory. Verification never appears on your public profile beyond the badge itself.
If a check doesn't pass — usually a blurry photo or poor lighting, not a real problem with the document — you can try again from your account at any time.

Staff review

Khandaan staff can review and, where warranted, override an automated result from the admin console — for example, correcting a false rejection. Staff never see or request your ID document directly; an override is a judgement call on the automated outcome, not a manual document review.
