Behind Khandaan

Why Khandaan Doesn’t Show Surnames, Addresses or Photos by Default

By the Khandaan team · Updated · 2 min read

A matrimonial profile can be a sensitive thing. It describes someone’s family, work and hopes for their future, and it is often about a daughter or son who has not chosen to be searchable by name. When we designed Khandaan, privacy was the starting point. Here is what we do, and why.

A first name and a surname initial

Families on Khandaan are listed as, for example, “Family of Aisha R.”. A first name makes a profile easy to remember and discuss with a relative. The surname never appears, because a daughter’s full name being permanently searchable is exactly what many families want to avoid.

City, not address

A profile shows the city, and nothing more precise: no street, no suburb. That is enough to know whether a match is practical, and not enough to find a home. We believe that is the right balance between usefulness and safety.

Photos stay private until both families agree

By default, photos are not visible to the public. They are shared only once both families have agreed to connect. A family can choose to make one photo public, and that choice belongs to them, but it is never required.

  • No photo is shown unless the family chooses to share it publicly.
  • Full details and photos open only after both families agree.
  • Contact details are never shown on a profile.

ID checks are optional and the photos are deleted

Members can choose to send a photo of a government ID and a selfie so that a Khandaan team member can review them and award a badge. The photos are deleted once the check is done. It is a basic check, not a background check, and it is not required to open an account. Read more about how verification works.

No card details

Unlimited introductions are a one-time payment by PayID, and we never ask for or store card details. Fewer sensitive details held is fewer details that can leak.

What this costs us, and why we accept it

Privacy makes the product a little slower and a little less flashy. A family cannot scroll through a gallery of photos, and profiles are lighter on detail until both sides are ready. We think that is the right price. Families should be able to look without being looked at.
